My daughter mentioned that we had not vacationed as much as we did last year. With the price of gas and purchasing the house, I just do not have the time or money to get away. So I thought of this topic.

What are some of your favorite gas tank getaways? A gas tank getaway is a cool place that you can get to in one gas tank.

So please post some of your favorites here.

Try Indiana Beach in Monticello, 90 miles from Indy (Castleton). Use coupons from the Indy Zoo book for discounts on the rides. We went a few weeks ago. Was a blast. And the Fair Oaks dairy farm is a little bit further north on I-65. http://www.fofarms.com/

My wife and I like to go camping so, we are taking our oldest son this next weekend. That usually takes about a tank. Usually go to Turkey run or Lake Waveland.

The week of the 4th of July, my wife and I went down to Holiday World in Santa Claus, IN. We rented an RV at Camp Rudolph which is attached to Holiday world. We stayed 3 days and 2 Nights with 2 days at the park for 2 adults and 2 children (1 yo and 3 yo). We spent right around 500 with gas in my $34,000 portable DVD player (the wife had to have the built in DVD player in our Envoy). Great Value Getaway.

Indiana Beach has a great campground too, with it's own water park (the massively giant water bucket dumps every 4 minutes), putt putt and video games. And a shuttle bus to the beach, with free passes in (saves $2.50 per). Our kids (ages 8,6,3) had a great time. There's an old fashioned drive-in movie theatre nearby too. Never been to Holiday World but heard it's fun but at $4/gallon, it's 380 miles round trip away compared to 180. Maybe I listen to Dave Ramsey too much??

I think next year we will give Indiana Beach a try. I haven't been there in about 20 or 25 years I think. I am sure alot has changes since I was there last. Does the camp ground rent out RVs and do they have a beach on site? My wife is from Carmel and that is as close to camping (if you can call it camping) that I can get her. She says that I am too "hilljack" sometimes.

My wife and I recently took our daughter to Traders Point Creamery in Zionsville. It is a organic farm where you can watch the cows get milked and on Friday nights they have a farmers market. You can see the cows get milked everyday at 4:00. They also have fresh milk and cheese to sample. It didnt sound like fun at first but after going and seeing the joy on my daughters face it was definetly worth it. If you are interested their website is

My wife and I enjoy going down to French Lick to go through the hotels (French Lick Springs Resort and the West Baden Springs Resort). The boys enjoy the old train that gives rides out to a neighboring town and back. We don't gamble at the casino located there, we go for the atmosphere.

During the 4th of July weekend its fun to go down to Madison, Indiana for the Madison Regatta.
There you can camp for 3 days while you watch the Regatta. (There is a movie called Madison about the boat racing there. During the day on Saturday they have a Air Show as well as lots of activites for the whole family. Saturday night they have a fireworks show right on the river from a barge. you can watch it all right from your camp site. Also, its very close to Cliffty Falls state park a really nice park with good trails. I would say try going there next year.

I'm not sure if Indiana Beach (IB) rents RV's. We have a camper so we didn't inquire. I did see cabins in the campground and IB park has nice housing (but call way ahead).

We camped at Clifty Falls last year, nice place. And Mundts in Madison has awesome ice cream. McCormicks Creek has great trails too. My kids enjoyed walking through wolf cave. Me? I had to crawl some, a tight fit. Take a flashlight.

I tell you, an inexpensive way to entertain kids is geocaching.com. Buy a hand held GPS (like Magellan on ebay.com for $70), go to the website I listed, type in your zip code, enter some way-points into the GPS and go a treasure hunt. We take our GPS when we camp.

I am glad to see so many people go to Madison and Clifty. It is THE place my wife and I love. We go camping there every 4th of July and LOVE it. We had some neighbor campers offer us free tickets to the regatta. We declined. It just seemed to be too big of a mess. Esp. after they told us what happened to them. Turkey Run is my second favorite place to go hiking. Hard to go wrong at a state park.
