I have been a single dad for 5 years and everyday is still a challenge and learning experience. Lately I have been dealing with the thought that maybe my daughter could be going through puberty. After doing a ton of research on the internet, talking with my sister (a very awkward conversation), and today went to the doctor about my daughters stomach pains I was wrong. She is still a bit young to be going through it but it put the idea that it will be happening soon in my head. I admit I freaked out a bit but I used the opportunity to see what I can do as a father to make sure she won't be embarrassed and hopefully opened up a line of trust with her. The backup plan is that my sister will be able to talk to her. Either way this experience opens up a new door of being a single dad that I wasn't aware of. I really thought I had until she was 12 or 13 before I dealt with this.
Maybe there is something we can do as single dads to make each other prepared for this experience. The doctor did give me some documents to read about little girls and their periods but its to medical. I want something that can help a dad deal with the possible embarrassed feelings of his daughter and get him mentally prepared for this. Any mom and dad that is interested in helping me create some resources for single dads let me know by email. eric(at)indydads(dot)com.
