For the past couple of days the AC in my house has begun to get warmer & warmer. Now, when I turn the AC on I feel air flow but it's not cold. I'm going to try and clean the coils tomorrow, but if that doesn't work does anyone have any suggestions? I know virtually nothing about HVAC other than how to change the filter in my furnace. Any advice would help.

Sometimes you can find AC service ads where they'll come out and do a free estimate on your AC and tell you what might be wrong with it. The only other things I can think of is the charge might be off, or it might be low on coolant or something like that.

It's funny you mention the ads becuse my wife just called to tell me about a Dial-1 add she saw on TV that is relatively inexpensive. Talking with some of the guys around my office they suggested the same thing as you. I guess I'll be calling Dial-1 sometime today to schedule a check-up. Hopefully when they come out they tell me that my coolant is low or something that I can easily fix that is inexpensive. Thanks for the advice.

If it's low on coolant (freon), that is not a DIY repair. Only licensed HVAC Service Techs can add more because it's use is regulated (they have to report how much they dispense). Unfortunately, it's not the same kind of freon that you can buy in a can for your car at Autozone.

The Service Tech can also find if there is a leak.

From my limited experience with HVAC, I would say you have one of three problems or a combination of them. 1) you already named it, the coils are dirty and need to be cleaned so they can run properly 2) the coolant is running low or is out, typically an older unit will run through its coolant charge much quicker than a newer unit, also while cleaning the coils investigate for a leak it isn't something that is likely but has been known to happen before 3) your thermostat is on the fritz alot of broken thermostats are to blame for the problem, it could be that it is ready the temp wrong and is blowing air to cool the area down, just not cold air. These are common HVAC issues and none of them really cost you much money, except the coolant some guys charge an arm and a leg for that and there is nothing you can do because unless you have the proper credentials finding coolant is almost impossible.

I would check those things first (obviously can't check the coolant) and then call someone out if those aren't the problems.

I have a good one, but on the southside. If you just need a physical and small stuff, I suggest Walgreens Care Clinics or CVS's - I saw where Walgreens are doing physicals for $35.00
